McNamee: Some items in beer can not from Clemens

By FREDERIC J. FROMMER

updated 11:55 a.m. ET May 18, 2012

WASHINGTON – Brian McNamee testified Friday that some of the medical evidence he saved in a beer can was not used on former pitcher Roger Clemens.

McNamee is the main prosecution witness in the case against Clemens, who’s accused of lying to Congress when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs. McNamee testified this week that he injected the seven-time Cy Young Award winner with steroids and human growth hormone.

McNamee has said he kept medical evidence from injecting Clemens with steroids in 2001, and stored some of the material in a Miller Lite beer can. But under cross-examination, he acknowledged that some of the items in the can were not in fact used on Clemens, such as a small bottle of HGH, a needle to inject HGH, and a bottle of saline solution used for such injections.

McNamee, Clemens’ former strength and conditioning coach, also testified that a pin included in the beer can might not have been used on Clemens. He said it was either used on Clemens or another player, whom he did not name.

Clemens lawyer Rusty Hardin is trying to raise doubts about the integrity of the evidence.

“You were a police office for three years, you know about chain of custody?” he asked.

“A little bit,” McNamee replied.

“Haven’t you testified that everything in beer can was for Roger?” Hardin asked.

“Not everything,” McNamee said. He added: “I’ve said that all along – it could have been from three different players.”

Although Hardin expressed shock that some items in the beer can were not used on Clemens, McNamee told congressional investigators the same thing in 2008, prior to the hearing in which he and Clemens testified.

An investigator questioned the source of the HGH in the beer can, because McNamee said he injected Clemens with HGH only in 2000, not 2001. The investigator asked if it was Chuck Knoblauch, who has admitted taking HGH.

“It can only be Knoblauch,” McNamee replied.

Also Friday, U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton said he hoped the trial would be over by June 8. He said he had conflicts for the next several weeks after that and that if the trial isn’t finished by then, “We’ll probably have to go into recess for at least a month, and then we’ll have some real unhappy jurors.”

The day before, out of earshot of the jury, the judged revealing that some jurors had wondered how long the trial will last.

“At this pace, I’ll guess we’ll be here forever,” Walton said.

A prosecutor said he expected to finish the case by the end of next week – or at the latest early the following week. He said the government had 14 more witnesses after McNamee.

“Fourteen additional witnesses?” Walton said incredulously.

After the government’s case, the defense then brings its own witnesses if it chooses to.

Walton said that the case is taking too long, that jurors want to get back to their lives. He warned that one side could suffer – although he didn’t know which one.

Chided by the judge on Thursday for what he called a confusing and mostly pointless cross-examination, Hardin finally turned, after 19 hours, to his central accusation: that McNamee doctored the physical evidence to frame the former star pitcher.

Hardin started that attack late Thursday, insinuating that McNamee manufactured the evidence after Clemens’ televised denials of steroids use.

“All of a sudden, the person being accused is fighting back,” Hardin said, “and you have to figure out some way to save yourself.”

Defense lawyers have said that they will attack the chain of custody of the materials, which McNamee said he stored at his house from 2001 until 2008, when he and his lawyers turned the evidence over to federal authorities.

The Clemens team has also suggested that McNamee put the steroids in the needle after injecting Clemens and that McNamee actually used the needle to inject Clemens with vitamin B12. Clemens has maintained for years that he received B12 shots and the local anesthetic lidocaine but not performance-enhancing drugs.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Review

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, the tablet of all tablets, or just another tablet swimming in the sea? Read the review to find out!

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1

While we aim to find the perfect Android handset to accompany our daily lives, the struggle continues far beyond that. With Android tablets ranging from low end to high end with various price points and feature sets, figuring out which tablet is right for you is no simple task. Last year we saw Samsung introduce the original Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, at the time it was a flagship device and people could not get enough. A year later we are introduced to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, the new dog in town.

Could Samsung out do what they brought to the table last year, and have a knock out device to put in our hands? Let's hit the break and check out how the Samsung Galaxy 2 10.1 tablet compares in the world of Android tablets, and see if this may just end up being your very next tablet.

The Good

While packing a 10.1 inch display, the overall device is very lightweight and extremely thin. The layout allows for easy access to buttons, and it can be charged while still in use without affecting your grip.

The Bad

Samsung has chosen to lay their TouchWiz over top of a mostly stock ICS, The cameras are far from ideal, and while the speakers are well placed, they could use some improvement as well.

Conclusion

For the price point and features you will receive, the Samsung Tab 2 10.1 brings the best of a middle range pricing to high end specs. The 10.1 inch display is a beauty, and Ice Cream Sandwich performs very well on the device.

Happy Mother’s Day From Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift

Above the Buzz rounds up the best pop songs praising mom.
By Jocelyn Vena

Mother’s Day is just around the bend — Sunday, to be exact. If you’re reading this and that’s news to you, you might want to order your mama some flowers and read on for some awesome mixtape song selections courtesy of Above the Buzz.

Pop music has had a longstanding tradition of cranking out tunes that pay homage to the most important woman in everyone’s life: mommy dearest. How could you not look to mom for musical inspiration? She loves you unconditionally, pushes you to be your best, is an awesome shopping buddy and, at one point, let you make that terrible decision of rocking blond highlights back in high school when you really had no business being blonde.

Basically, she’s your friend until the end. So, hit record on your boom box and collect these tunes to let mom know how much you love and appreciate her. (And, yes, I am writing this column from a random Mother’s Day in the ’90s when people still recorded mixtapes off boom boxes.)

In 1999, the Backstreet Boys released a sappy ballad titled “The Perfect Fan.” With touches of gospel on the track, the sentiment thanking their moms for always being supportive reaches it crescendo when the fivesome declare, “I wanna thank you for what you’ve done/ In hopes I can give back to you/ And be the perfect son.” Writing a song about your mom, boys, is certainly a good start.

Years before BSB dropped their mommy ode, Boyz II Men released “A Song for Mama” in 1997. In the deeply emotional ballad produced and written by Babyface, the guys praise their mamas for showing them the right thing to do. “You’re always there for me/ Have always been around for me, even when I was bad/ You showed me right from my wrong/ Yes, you did,” they sing. And, we swooned.

That same year, the Spice Girls released “Mama.” Lyrically, it is a bit different from the tracks the boys released. The song is about the girls’ growing relationships with their moms, who went from their biggest enemy when they were teens to being their best friends as adults. The ladies sing, “Back then, I didn’t know why/ Why you were misunderstood/ So now I see through your eyes/ All that you did was love.”

An equally touching ode from Christina Aguilera, “Oh Mother,” delves into a more serious topics than those other tracks. Released in 2006, the song reflects on her mother’s abusive relationship with her father. The song is incredibly personal, relaying some details about watching her mother get abused. But, in the end, she wants her mom to know this: “So mother, I thank you/ For all that you’ve done and still do/ You got me, I got you/ Together, we always pull through.”

On the other side of the emotional mom rollercoaster is Taylor Swift‘s “The Best Day,” which she dropped in 2008. The track is a mid-tempo jam about all the awesome things her mom does to make her feel better when she’s low and all the things her mom taught her. “I know you were on my side even when I was wrong/ And I love you for giving me your eyes/ For staying back and watching me shine/ And I didn’t know if you knew, so I’m takin’ this chance to say/ That I had the best day with you today,” she sings. You said it for all of us, girl!

With a new Mother’s Day upon us, Justin Bieber is getting in on the action with his new track “Turn to You.” Given the tradition he’s following in, it’s a nice sentiment from a boy who truly loves his mom. And, there’s nothing more adorable than a pop star who knows where it’s at.

Because we know where it’s at, we have this final message: Happy Mother’s Day, mom! All these songs say it all and so much more. You rock! Now, go tell your mom how you feel about her — she deserves it.
